Preparing Student Housing Operators for a Safe Spring
Appointments Module
Appointments are one of the best solutions offered by StarRez to assist with social distancing. We encourage you to think of how you can use this at your institution this Spring. Below are some highlights of Appointments that could be helpful to you.
- Move-In Appointments
- Move Out Appointments
- Common Spaces Reservations
- Examples Include: Gym, Study Lounges, Showers, Laundry, and More
- Package Pick Up Times
- Health and Safety Inspections Appointments
Check out our article on Quick Wins For Uncertain Times With Appointment Timeslots to find out how this helped our community schedule move-ins to limit the number of students arriving at a particular time to ensure social distancing.
"Today was the first day (of 4) of move in with the appointments module and everyone (including upper-level administration) was blown away at how smoothly everything went. Now all of us in the student affairs division are advocating to do staggered move-in for next year because this was the smoothest move-in to date."
– Corey Overstreet, Virginia Wesleyan University.
One of the great features of the Appointment Module is the flexibility and customization to ensure Social Distancing can happen. Examples of this include:
- Preventing roommates or suitemates from having the same appointment time
- Limit how many appointments can occur at one time, per floor
- Limit selection to 1 appointment per day/24 hours

Dashboards and Reporting
Providing information to your staff and campus partners is a key element to a successful check-in. Dashboards can be a great way to share relevant information with groups, that may need real-time data and numbers. Some great examples we have seen include the following information:
- Amount of Arrivals, Per Day
- Active numbers of In-Room Bookings, By Location
- Failed Check-Ins
- Number of appointments for Shower use
- Resource Tracking
- Past Due Resources
- Rooms Closed for Cleaning
If you have not had the chance to dive in and build a dashboard, we encourage you to start small. Creating buy-in can take time for using dashboards, and we know a lot of our customers have seen this pay out in dividends. For more information on Dashboard and Reporting for our community, head to the StarCare Online Articles below.
A video testimonial on this solution is also available on 16 Reasons Why You'll Love Dashboards & Reporting.
StarRez Housing App
The StarRez Housing App can help you and your staff manage tasks, all while using a cell phone or tablet. The app will allow you to review Entry Records, Check on Room Assignments, Allow for Fast Check-In/Out, and more. You can leverage the mobile app and reporting to provide important information to your users and staff.
"The report I made to show up on the Entry in the StarRez Housing App was very helpful. I had it coded to tell staff exactly what they could do. If something was missing, they knew what it was and what to tell the student. If they were okay to move-in, it said whether they were cleared for their real room or an isolation room"
– Brady Rowe, University of Oregon.
Pivoting to keep our community safe
Back in March 2020, when we realized the pandemic would affect almost all our customers, our developers went to work, creating some great tools that can help assist you in valuable time-saving ways. All these tools were made available for free during the pandemic. Visit our blog to learn more on how we equipped our community for COVID-19 recovery on Streamlining Residential Health and Safety.
We also have a webinar on Contactless Move-in which provides further information on the told available for the safety and well-being of residents.
Looking to the Future
We here at StarRez hope that there will be a return to normalcy soon, and we are also committed to providing you with the tools and resources you need in these difficult times. We hope to see you in one of our many upcoming webinars and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
